Wimbledon Embraces Video Review Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Replay technology are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the right to challenge specific rulings from the official, following the system already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step follows just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Further Updates

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
